Safety comes first in all sports. There are many ways injuries occur on the baseball field. You need to keep track of where the ball travels so that you don’t inadvertently get hit by it. If you’re caught unawares, taking a baseball in the face can easily cost you a tooth or two. Sliders can hit you in the legs, too.

Helmets for batting need to be worn when you’re hitting a baseball. These helmets provide protection against injuries to the head. Good helmets also have an integrated shield to protect the battery’s face.

Always pay attention to where players are during the game. Many collisions can be prevented by knowing the whereabouts of other players. Head injuries may happen when there is a collision. Letting your teammates know when you’re going for a ball is the easiest way to prevent a collision.

When you coach baseball, it is important to have a good practice schedule so that all the players know what to expect and can set their own personal goals. Generally, baseball practice that is effective needs several minutes of warm up, and then twenty minutes of hitting and team drills. Have the team run the bases for the next 5 minutes, followed by situational and team defense drills for another 10. Finish with about 10 minutes of position-specific defenses and then a cool down. Finally, have a short team meeting.

It’s important to learn and implement the signs given to you by the base coach. Base coaches have the best view of the playing field. Make sure your focus is on running the bases rather than on the ball. Follow them with your eyes. When they say wait, you wait. If they signal you to go, then put it into full speed ahead.

Do not stretch across the body to catch grounders. Instead, you will want to quickly move left or right in order to get your glove right in the path of the ball. If you don’t, the ball could bounce off your glove’s side.

When you pitch a ball, learn how to hold and throw it properly. Put your middle finger onto the seam to start. Your thumb should be placed on the opposite seam. This will give you a firm grip on the ball.
