By The 9-Innings

Have you ever been curious about baseball? Well you probably are because you wouldn’t be here right now. Maybe you’re just confused about the rules or don’t understand why people enjoy it so much? No matter your reasons for being here, your curiosity has told you that baseball is a sport you want to learn more about. Keep reading to learn some interesting baseball tid-bits.

Learn how to use cut-off men when playing the outfield. With your adrenaline pumping, you may feel like you can throw that ball clear to home plate, but cut-off men are typically the better choice to make. Getting the ball back into your closest infielder will give your team a better shot for an out. The shorter throw means a more accurate throw.

Batting helmets protects against concussions. This will protect you from nasty head injuries. Ideally, a batting helmet should have a strong shield that prevents the face from getting hit by a ball that is pitched in the wrong spot and from foul balls as well.

Learn how to play as a team. Baseball may not feel like a team sport in the same way as basketball or football, but it certainly still is one. When you master how to play as a team, especially on defense and when there are men on base in offense, you’ll start winning more games than you lose!

Make sure you stay aware of where every player is located on the field. Many collisions can be prevented by knowing the whereabouts of other players. This can cause very serious injury. Call the ball to let everyone know that you are headed in the direction of the ball.

If you are coaching kids, you have to make sure your practice sessions are enjoyable. Here are a few techniques you can use to make sure everyone has a good time. Be certain all the kids have a chance to participate equally. Get the parents to join the game occasionally. Try out new drills from time to time so no one gets bored. Give both positive and negative feedback. End the practice with something fun.

Hustle hard! You want to lead by example. That is the sort of clubhouse leader who alters the game. Be someone who your teammates look up to and want to follow.

Listen to your base coaches. They have a better view of the field than you do when you are on base. Do not run unless they tell you to run. Also, while running, keep your ears open to your coach. He may need to tell you to slide into base.

If you are a first base coach, you have certain responsibilities. Basically, you must encourage the batter to hustle down the first baseline on all infield hits. You also have to remind the runners as to how many outs there are. You must instruct the runner when it is time ti take an extra base, round first base or hold up. You also have to tell runners how far they should go on pop flies.

When fielding a ground ball, square up on the ball before catching. Many young players go for a side glove catch or a one-handed grab, but with each you are increasing your chances for an error. If you’ve got the time to get in front of the ball, do so. Use both hands and bend at the knees to help block against a bad hop.

Now that you read the above article, you should be confused about baseball anymore. It really is just a simple game between two teams of 9, and you can enjoy it even more by studying the tips you just read. Keep them close by, and soon you will see how much this game means to you.
