By The 9-Innings

Baseball has long been “America’s Pastime,” and it has been beloved by millions of fans for generations. The love of the game is often passed down from father to son. If you love baseball, there is always something new to learn about this great game. Keep reading for some great baseball tips.

Learn how to hit a ball without chasing it by using a batting cage. A batting cage allows you to hit the ball as hard as you can without worrying about an errant ball going through a window. The batting cage has mesh sides so the ball is easily recovered.

Catcher’s equipment helps to keep the catcher safe. A catcher’s uniform will include shin guards, a hat with a facemask and a chest protector. In addition to these items, most catchers wear a cup to protect the groin. Finally, a catcher’s mitt is used to help stop the ball quickly.

Always warm up before a game. Baseball may not look as strenuous as other sports, but there’s still a lot of physical activity you’ll be taking part in. In fact, sprinting on the base paths without a proper warm up can lead to pulled muscles and situations that are much more serious.

Base coaches can be very helpful as you round the bases. They can see everything which is going on. Focus on the bases when you are running, not on the ball. Let them act as your eyes. When they indicate you should stop, do so at the base closest to you. If they want you to keep running, don’t hesitate.

It’s a good idea to start breaking your glove in well before baseball season starts. If you’re lucky enough to have a fresh glove for the season, you are much better off taking a few weeks prior and really working that glove. Toss a baseball repeatedly into it. There is leather oil that helps break in the glove a lot faster. With your fist, punch the weave. A broken-in glove works better than a stiff one.

Make sure you are ready to run after your bat makes contact with the baseball. To start with, let go of the bat instead of throwing it. That is dangerous since it is usually made of wood or aluminum. That wasted motion also slows you down when you run to first base.

Don’t be afraid to get your uniform dirty. Baseball is a game played in grass and dirt. You aren’t playing to 100% if you come out of any game with your uniform as pristine as it was when you first put it on. Make it a goal to get as dirty as possible.

To keep your fingers from getting hurt while bunting, make sure to keep them on your side of the bat. If you wrap them around the bat, the pitch can hit them. You end up with a painful bunt, with no control over where the ball goes, instead of a nifty sacrifice.

You must learn to stretch to reach the ball when you are playing the first base position. Put your glove out toward the ball and move your other foot out as well, but make sure you keep one foot on base.

Stay relaxed when trying to catch a ball. A stiff hand always leads to a missed catch. To keep your hand relaxed wear the glove until it feels like it is a part of your hand. If the glove doesn’t fit right, you will miss a lot of catches.

Whether you love to play baseball, watch baseball, or read about baseball, there is always more to learn. The article you have just read is just a starting point. Keep reading more about this great sport to enhance your enjoyment of it. Before long, you will be an expert on it!
