Want To Learn How To Play Some Baseball?

By The 9-Innings

The crack of the bat, the slap of the ball against the glove. Baseball is a sport that involves the sights and sounds. Watching the game is as fun as playing. Read on for great baseball information.

Learn how to hit a ball without chasing it by using a batting cage. A batting cage allows you to hit the ball as hard as you can without worrying about an errant ball going through a window. The batting cage has mesh sides so the ball is easily recovered.

There is no magic stance for hitting a baseball. You should stand in a comfortable position with your shoulders parallel to your body and your toes pointed towards home base. Avoid trying to imitate another players stance if it doesn’t feel comfortable. Figure out your most comfortable batting position when you’re not holding the bat.

If you are a coach who’s struggling to maintain the attention of the team during practice, try changing things up. Repetition of drills is sure to produce boredom. Every practice should be fresh and have a different drill order.

Slide your weight onto your back foot when you are batting. You will put the weight on the side you are batting with, and your leg muscle will tighten up. When swinging, the increased power comes from the back foot.

Test out a few bat weights to find the one that’s right for you. If a bat is heavy, you’ll slow down your swing, but gain some power. Too slow, though, and you may never catch up with the pitches. You’ve got to strike the right balance, especially if you’ve got a flame thrower on the mound.

Practice your defense. Sure pitching and batting get all of the glory, but being a great defensive player is worth just as much to your team. The ability to save a run is just as valuable as the ability to create a run. Both are needed to win ball games.

There are several important items for a baseball player. A hat will keep the sun out of your eyes when catching a pop fly. A glove allows you to catch the ball. The bat is used to hit the ball. Finally, baseball cleats give you the necessary traction needed while running.

Pick the right bat. Pick out one that is not too heavy for you. Beginners should use lighter bats. It is pretty rare to see someone swing a bat that is “too light” because there is a trick called “choking up” to make bats lighter. This involves placing hands about an inch or two up the bat.

Listen to your base coaches. They have a better view of the field than you do when you are on base. Do not run unless they tell you to run. Also, while running, keep your ears open to your coach. He may need to tell you to slide into base.

When coaching baseball, make sure you have an established practice schedule so all players will know what is expected and can allocate personal goals accordingly. Generally speaking, a good baseball practice should consist of a ten minute warm-up followed by twenty minutes of team and individual hitting drills. The next five minutes should be base running, followed by 10 minutes of team defense strategy and situational drills. Finish with about 10 minutes of position-specific defenses and then a cool down. Finally, have a short team meeting.

Are you a long time baseball fan? Or you may have just recently come to love the game. Or, you might be trying to learn more about it for the first time. No matter who you are, the information you have just read will enhance your enjoyment of the great game of baseball.
