What You Must Know If You’re Into Baseball

By The 9-Innings

There is nothing quite like the crack of the bat or the slap of the ball into a leather glove to really get a baseball fan going. Unfortunately, not everyone has the information necessary to make the most of their own potential as a player. The article that follows is meant to remedy that problem.

If you’re playing infield and a groundball is hit, always go toward it. Don’t sit there and wait for the ball to come to you. This will help you have a much better chance of getting the batter out and your team will appreciate it. This also applies to outfielders as well.

Test out a few bat weights to find the one that’s right for you. If a bat is heavy, you’ll slow down your swing, but gain some power. Too slow, though, and you may never catch up with the pitches. You’ve got to strike the right balance, especially if you’ve got a flame thrower on the mound.

Remember that baseball is only a game. Yes, it may be important to you and your team, but you don’t want to let it get you down. Even if you make a mistake, if you keep positive there’s always a chance to correct that mistake. But if you let it bother you, chance are you’ll make another mistake.

Safety is vital when playing all types of sports. This goes double for baseball. You should always be aware of where the ball will be so you don’t get hurt. Errant balls can cause lost teeth if you don’t pay attention. And someone sliding into a base can really damage your legs if you aren’t careful.

Always hustle to first base, even if you think you have made an out. You never know what could happen with fielder; he could drop the ball or throw it away. By running as fast as you can, you may be able to get a base hit you did not expect.

Catcher’s equipment helps to keep the catcher safe. A catcher’s uniform will include shin guards, a hat with a facemask and a chest protector. In addition to these items, most catchers wear a cup to protect the groin. Finally, a catcher’s mitt is used to help stop the ball quickly.

Always warm up before a game. Baseball may not look as strenuous as other sports, but there’s still a lot of physical activity you’ll be taking part in. In fact, sprinting on the base paths without a proper warm up can lead to pulled muscles and situations that are much more serious.

Keep your head up, your eyes level and focus on the ball when batting. You should be looking over your front arm. If you shift your eyes or move your head, your rear shoulder will shift in reaction. Remaining focused on the ball and keeping your head immobile will give you better timing and more consistency.

Pick the right bat. Pick out one that is not too heavy for you. Beginners should use lighter bats. It is pretty rare to see someone swing a bat that is “too light” because there is a trick called “choking up” to make bats lighter. This involves placing hands about an inch or two up the bat.

If you are a first base coach, you have certain responsibilities. Basically, you must encourage the batter to hustle down the first baseline on all infield hits. You also have to remind the runners as to how many outs there are. You must instruct the runner when it is time ti take an extra base, round first base or hold up. You also have to tell runners how far they should go on pop flies.

On warm, sunny summer days, no activity seems quite as perfect as the playing of a baseball game. Every player wants to improve their skills, and luckily, there are ways to do just that. Refer back to the above information when needed to become a truly impressive addition to the team.
